Spending time on the water in my kayak, I'm always fascinated by the ripples in the water, growing outward from everything that touches the surface.
When throwing these mugs on my pottery wheel I'm thinking about how those ripples add to the relaxing effect of being on the water and I wanted to bring them to the table. Each Lake Ripple mug is wheel thrown and adding the deep ripples is the last step before removing the pot from my wheel. Once the ripple pot is on the drying board, I impress my thumb in the side to dent it.
Several hours after making the cup, the bottom is neatly trimmed and my signature dimpled handle is added. Once the handle is in place it is shaped to fit the hand comfortably and a thumb impression is made at the top to add even more coziness to your experience and the indentation made earlier with my thumb in the side of the cup allows your knuckles to nestle without burning. If you like to hold your mug around the body to keep your hands warm, that thumb dent makes it easy to grip.
Textures and details are what drives me to create. I love creating the little nuances that make your morning coffee or tea more enjoyable.
